CD4 Lymphocytopenia is Not New AIDS Agent, CDC Says

Unexplained CD4 T lymphocytopenia in children does not appear to indicate a lack of evidence for a new AIDS agent and is unlikely to be a major public health problem, according to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Several recent reports have described profound CD4 lymphocyte depletion or disease associated with severe immunosuppression among adults and children uninfected with HIV. Reverse transcriptase activity was detected in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from several patients, and one report described a human intracisternal retroviral particle cocultured from a patient with CD4 T lymphocyte depletion and Pneumocystis...
