Education/Mortality Gap Is Widening

Death Rate Higher Among High School Dropouts

Published in Medical Letter on the CDC and FDA, July 3rd, 1995

The National Center for Health Statistics said on June 22, 1995, that the death rate among adults ages 25 to 64 who failed to finish high school was 30 percent higher than those who got their diplomas, and more than double those who attended college for at least one year.

That has held true for years, but the gap has widened recently, the center said in the 307-page book, "Health, United States, 1994."

"We see better health outcomes for the more educated right from the start," said Dr. Philip R. Lee, the assistant secretary for health and head of the Public Health Service.
