Gunshots to Brain Surpass Head Wounds From Autos

Prevention efforts aimed at reducing head injuries in the United States met with mixed results, with improvements in curbing car-related injuries and failures in lowering gun-related trauma to the brain.

Citing statistics from 1979 to 1992, D.M. Sosin and colleagues reported their mixed findings in an article, "Trends in death associated with traumatic brain injury, 1979 through 1992: Success and failure." (JAMA - Journal of the American Medical Association, June 14, 1995;273(22):1778-1780).

An average of 52,000 U.S. residents die each year with traumatic brain injuries. The death rate associated with brain injury declined 22 percent in the study...
