Rhode Island Home Healthcare Study:

Infusion Nutrition Patients At Risk for Blood Infections

Published in Medical Letter on the CDC and FDA, July 24th, 1995

Patients of a home health agency were more likely to succumb to a bloodstream infection when a needleless device was used for their total parenteral nutrition and intralipid therapy (TPN/IL), according to a study by CDC's Lisa E. Danzig and colleagues. This finding held true for patients whose injection caps were changed every seven days.

Danzig and colleagues published their findings in an article entitled, "Bloodstream infections associated with a needleless intravenous infusion system in patients receiving home infusion therapy," (JAMA - Journal of the American Medical Association, June 21, 1995;273(23):1862-1864).
