Herpesvirus Type 6 is Linked to Multiple Sclerosis

The virus, which causes the common childhood disease roseola in some 30 percent of U.S. residents, has been linked to encephalitis and other serious diseases in patients with underlying immunosuppression. It is implicated as a cofactor in AIDS pathogenesis. Because it attacks cells of the immune system, HHV-6 itself can be immunosuppressive.
