CDC Says HIV+ May Need to Boil Drinking Water

It is possible for HIV infected persons to contract cryptosporidiosis by drinking tap water, but it is not clear how significant this risk is, according to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

CDC researcher Dennis D. Juranek writes that the risk is likely to vary from city to city depending on the quality of the individual water source and the treatment provided.

Six outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis caused by drinking water have been reported in the United States, including an outbreak in Milwaukee in 1993 that affected more than 400,000 people (N Eng J Med 1994;331:161-167).
