Mosquitoes in U.S. Transmitted Malaria to Two New Yorkers

Two New Yorkers, and possibly a third, got malaria from local mosquitoes, backing up experts' warnings that even people who never travel to tropical countries can still get tropical diseases.

Investigators believe that a mosquito in New York City bit a malaria-infected person - a recent immigrant or an American returning from vacation - and passed the disease to its next human meal.

The infection "demonstrates the potential for reintroduction of malaria transmission into areas that are no longer endemic and emphasizes the need for continued surveillance and prompt investigations," said Dr. Marcelle Layton, an investigator at the New York City...
