CDC's Xiao Notes New Effect of Malarial Antigens on Endothelial Cells

CDC researchers have proposed that malarial antigens can trigger the activation of endothelial cells (EC) - the layer of flat squamous cells such as those lining the blood and lymphatic vessels and the heart - in addition to triggering cytoadherence of parasitized red blood cells (PRBC) to endothelial cells.

Previous studies of endothelial cells role in cerebral malaria have concentrated on the mechanisms of cytoadherence of parasitized red blood cells (PRBC) to the EC, Lihua Xiao and colleagues noted in the abstract they will present at the upcoming meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), November 17-21, 1995, in San Antonio, Texas...
