Signs Point to Surgery Scrub Nurse in C. albicans Cases Among Heart Patients

When 15 of a hospital's cardiac surgery patients began developing Candida albicans sternal wound infections in a three-month period, Dr. Carol A. Pertowski, of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) set out to determine why. Signs pointed to the scrub nurse working closest to the patients' sternal area, and to lengthy operations.

The Pertowski team's investigation of the 1989 infections led them to affirm the value of a combined epidemiological and molecular typing approach to investigate outbreaks.
