Drug-Resistant Gonorrhea Emerges in Denver, Seattle

Health workers in Denver, Colorado, and Seattle-King County, Washington, have reported resistant strains of gonorrhea at levels the CDC considers clinically significant. Affected drugs include the fluoroquinolones, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin.

Sporadic resistance to the drugs had been reported, but outright treatment failure still has not been confirmed. CDC sounded the alarm that a resistant strain appears to be emerging in a recent notice in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR, October 20, 1995;[44];41).
