Recommendations for the Prevention of Group B Streptococci Issued

Pregnant women would be treated with antibiotics during childbirth under new federal recommendations to prevent infections with a common bacteria that can be fatal in newborns.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued two recommendations for treating group B streptococci, which can cause pneumonia, meningitis, respiratory distress, or bloodstream infections in newborns.

Such infections strike about 7,500 U.S. newborns a year, or one in 500. They are often fatal.

The bacteria, found in a woman's reproductive or intestinal tract, can cause urinary tract infections in pregnant women, and in some cases...
