Conference Session Highlights Worldwide Threat

Researchers have identified some 30 previously unknown infectious diseases since 1973, including AIDS, Ebola hemorrhagic fever, Legionnaire's disease, and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.

"Clearly, the war against infectious diseases is far from over," Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) said. "New and improved strategies for controlling diseases are crucial."
