CDC Urged To Delay Polio Policy Change

Published in Medical Letter on the CDC and FDA, July 8th, 1996

The U.S. government has been urged not to follow through on its draft proposal to change the current polio immunization recommendation for children, at least until a safe and effective combination vaccine becomes available, according to a peer-reviewed report released by the Institute for Science and Public Policy (ISPP), Washington, D.C.

The reason for the delay is because of inadequate scientific data supporting a public health benefit, and the domestic threat of a resurgence of polio and an increased incidence of serious childhood diseases.
