CDC Updates Guidelines on Post-HIV Exposure Prophylaxis

Published in Medical Letter on the CDC and FDA, July 15th, 1996

In light of new therapies with greatly increased antiretroviral action, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its recommendations for chemoprophylaxis of HIV infection in health-care workers accidentally exposed to the virus.

The following announcement was published by the CDC in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly report (1996;45(22):468-472).

"Although preventing blood exposures is the primary means of preventing occupationally acquired human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, appropriate postexposure management is an important element of workplace safety.
