According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 96th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, held May 19-23, 1996, in New Orleans, Louisiana, "IS6110-based DNA fingerprinting of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is being used globally to study the epidemiology of TB in many populations. We previously reported that when IS6110 is used alone as a probe in population-based fingerprinting studies, patients who are grouped into clusters based upon common IS6110 fingerprints frequently can not be linked epidemiologically.
