"Do HIV Strain Differences Have a Significant Effect on HIV Transmission and Epidemiology?."

According to an abstract submitted by the author to the 11th International Conference on AIDS, held July 7-12, 1996, in Vancouver, British Columbia, "All infectious agents, including HIV, exhibit variability in genetic, phenotypic, and biologic properties. HIV shows high variability in its prevalence in different populations as well as the geographic distribution of the various HIV subtypes. Based on the ecological patterns of HIV distribution, it has been postulated that certain HIV-1 subtypes, namely E and by implication A, C, and D, may be significantly more transmissible than subtype B and that these transmission differences have significant effect on the HIV epidemic.
