House Committee Adopts Recommendations for Higher Blood Banking Standards

The U.S. Government Reform and Oversight Committee recently accepted a report calling for higher national standards to protect the nation's blood supply from emerging infectious agents and blood-borne pathogens.

The report was submitted by Congressman Christopher Shays (R-CT), Chairman of the Human Resources and Intergovernmental Relations Subcommittee (HRIR), which in April 1995 began an investigation concerning the safety of the nation's blood supply.
