According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 11th International Conference on AIDS, held July 7-12, 1996, in Vancouver, British Columbia, "In November 1994, the CHOP cardiac intensive care unit was relocated to a newly renovated area. Following an outbreak of Serratia marcescens in the CICU in 1995, we conducted a study to assess the role of nurse staffing changes on the overall nosocomial infection rate from December 1994 through December 1995 (study period). We calculated the monthly nursing hours: patient-days (RN:PT) ratio and the monthly CICU nosocomial infection rate (number infections/1000 patient-days).
