According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the American Society of Microbiology's 36th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, held September 15-18, 1996, in New Orleans, Louisiana, "Epidemiologic typing methods to determine the mechanism of emergence and spread of drug-resistant S. pneumoniae (DRSP) are important in designing prevention and control strategies. 25 penicillin-resistant (MIC {{>=}}2 mcg/ml) DRSP patient isolates were identified among 259 invasive pneumococci during population-based surveillance in 1994-5 in San Antonio, Texas.
