According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 10th International Congress of Virology, held August 11-16, 1996, in Jerusalem, Israel, "Molecular epidemiological methods and environmental sampling assume greater importance for monitoring wild poliovirus as the global effort to eradicate poliomyelitis approaches its goal. Surveillance of AfP cases and contacts is the traditional method for determining presence of wild poliovirus. New methods must be developed to confirm elimination of subclinical infections as AFP approaches background levels.
