According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 10th International Congress of Virology, held August 11-16, 1996, in Jerusalem, Israel, "The pace of global poliovirus eradication is accelerating. The basic strategy of mass immunization campaigns, synchronized within and among countries, has been highly successful. The annual incidence of paralytic poliomyelitis has fallen from >400,000 (1985) to <100,000 (1995). Expanding polio-free zones have developed in the Americas (last endemic case: Peru, 1991), the Pacific rim (last endemic case: China, 1994) western Europe, the Mideast, and southern Africa.
