Store's Hot Tub Display Sickened Nearby Customers

U.S. health officials said they may issue maintenance guidelines for whirlpool spas after a contaminated hot tub on display in a home-improvement store in Christiansburg, Virginia, caused two people to die from Legionnaires Disease in Fall 1996.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said 22 people who were hospitalized with Legionnaires disease in October 1996 had stood near the contaminated whirlpool spa, without ever getting in the water. Two of the patients died.
