"Role of Malarial Antigen-Induced Immune Stimulation on HIV-1 Replication."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 45th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, held December 1-5, 1996, in Baltimore, Maryland, "The time for the progression from initial HIV infection to AIDS in malaria-endemic areas is significantly shorter than in non-malarious regions. However, the effect malaria has on HIV infection and replication has not been evaluated. Although malaria infection-stimulated production of proinflammatory cytokines may be protective against malaria parasites, this immune stimulation may have deleterious effects on HIV replication.
