"Eradication of Guinea Worm Disease: Status and Progress of National Programs in Endemic Countries During 1996."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 45th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, held December 1-5, 1996, in Baltimore, Maryland, "The global eradication campaign has reduced the total of Guinea worm (Dracunculus medinensis) cases worldwide by more than 95% during the last decade from an estimated 3,500,000 cases for 1986 to a total of 129,834 cases reported for 1995. For January through March 1996, 11,656 cases were reported from endemic countries; a 36.0% reduction compared with the total for the same period of 1995.
