According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 45th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, held December 1-5, 1996, in Baltimore, Maryland, "In murine schistosomiasis, fewer worms develop in male than in female mice infected with the same number of cercariae. This partial resistance to Schistosoma mansoni infections in male mice appears to be due to host testosterone. Because testosterone does not seem to potentiate immune responses against schistosomes, the hormone may be acting directly on the parasite.
