Global public health programs conducted on an unprecedented scale are expected to end natural transmission of polio by the year 2000. The disease's formal death certificate is expected to be signed in 2005.
Only failure to continue political and financial support of these efforts can save the paralyzing disease.
"Global eradication of polio is feasible with existing vaccines, technical resources, and strategies," commented U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researcher Stephen L. Cochi and colleagues.
