Zaire Smallpox-Like Virus Reported

Published in Medical Letter on the CDC and FDA, April 21st, 1997

Ninety-two people in 12 villages in Zaire developed monkeypox in February 1997, in the largest known outbreak of the smallpox-like disease, the U.S. government said.

Three of the patients died of the disease. All were under the age of three.

Monkeypox, like smallpox, causes fever, breathing problems, and a blistering rash. After smallpox was eradicated in 1980, Zaire's government stopped giving vaccinations that also had protected against monkeypox.

The virus is limited to the African rain forest and isn't likely to reach the United States, said Dr. Yvan Hutin of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
