U.S. Flu Summary Update- Week 17

Published in Medical Letter on the CDC and FDA, May 26th, 1997

The Centers for Disease Control reported the following synopsis on flu and pneumonia for week 17, 1997:

For week 17, 24 influenza isolates have been reported so far, and 22 (92 percent) have been influenza type B. The pneumonia and influenza (P&I) mortality level was 6.9 percent, which was within levels expected for this time of year. Epidemiologists in 14 states and the District of Columbia reported sporadic influenza activity. There were no reports of regional or widespread activity. The percentage of patient visits to sentinel physicians for influenza-like illness (ILI) was at baseline levels in all regions.
