Polio Close to Elimination in Southeast Asia

Measures to eradicate polio have resulted in a 96 percent decrease in the number of reported cases in southeast Asia.

Reported cases dropped from 25,711 in 1988 to 1,116 in 1996, the CDC said ("Update: Progress Toward Poliomyelitis Eradication -- Southeast Asia Region, 1995-1997." MMWR MAY 30, 1997;46(21)). Thus, the region appears well on its way to achieving the World Health Organization's goal of global polio eradication by the year 2000.
