Evidence Suggests Hepatitis G Infection Does Not Worsen Hepatitis C Disease

A study conducted in conjunction with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers further evidence that hepatitis G virus coinfection does not worsen the course of hepatitis C virus-related disease.

Researcher T.L. Yashina and colleagues found, however, that hepatitis G virus (HGV) infection was significantly associated with hepatitis C virus (HCV).

HGV and GB virus C (GBV-C) are parenterally transmitted agents which may be involved in the etiology of non-A-E hepatitis. The nucleotide sequences of the NS3 regions of HGV and GBV-C are 85 percent identical and the amino acid sequences are 100 percent identical, suggesting that HGV...
