CDC Explains Its Stand On Controversial Third World AZT Study

Published in Medical Letter on the CDC and FDA, July 28th, 1997

The U.S. government's support of a study of the effects of the AIDS drug AZT (zidovudine) on preventing perinatal transmission of HIV is the subject of current ethical controversy.

The study subjects will be pregnant HIV positive women and the control group will be made up of pregnant uninfected women. The study will be conducted in Thailand and in the Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire), Africa.
