Contaminated Basil Causes Outbreak in Washington, D.C. Metro Area

The implication of three different sources of infection with Cyclospora in 1997 highlights the need for strengthened prevention and control measures to ensure the safety of fresh produce, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

During July 1997, state and local health departments in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia received reports of clusters of cases of cyclosporiasis associated with luncheons held in June and July.
