According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Fourth International Meeting on Bacterial Epidemiological Markers, held September 10-13, 1997, in Elsinore, Denmark, "Listeria monocytogenes is primarily transmitted through contaminated foods and causes an uncommon but often lethal infection in susceptible hosts. Of 13 known serotypes of L. monocytogenes, serotypes 1/2a, 1/2b and 4b are most often associated with human disease. Serotyping is an important aspect of characterization of L. monocytogenes and facilitates further characterization by more discriminating molecular subtyping methods.
