MDR-TB On Decline, But Spreading Throughout U.S.

Isoniazid resistance in the United States has remained relatively stable over the past few years, while multidrug-resistant tuberculosis appears to be on the decline, according to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Overall resistance to both isoniazid and rifampin, defined as multidrug-resistant (MDR-TB) tuberculosis, was 2.2 percent during the period from 1993 through 1996, while resistance to isoniazid alone was 8.4 percent.

Although the CDC statistics are generally good news to TB researchers, one ominous finding was that MDR-TB has now spread widely throughout the United States.
