According to an abstract submitted by the author to the 42nd Annual Meeting of the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists, held July 19-22, 1997, in Reno, Nevada, "Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. In the period 1992-1996, a median of 11,700 (range 8,257-15,055) cases were reported annually in people. Due to restricted distributions of efficient tick vectors, the disease is endemic to three regions of the United States, while the rest of the country remains essentially disease free.
