According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 37th ICAAC, held September 28 - October 1, 1997, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, "Although Mycobacteria spp. bloodstream infections (M-BSI) may occur frequently among HIV infected patients, criteria for performing blood cultures designed to detect M-BSI are not well defined. As a result, the prevalence of M-BSI may be underestimated, especially in parts of the developing world where both HIV infection and disease due to Mycobacteria spp. are prevalent, but limited resources restrict the use of blood cultures.
