Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 Prevalent in U.S. Population

The prevalence of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection has risen 30 percent since 1976, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers reported.

"...HSV-2 is now detectable in roughly one of five persons 12 years of age or older nationwide," wrote D.T. Fleming and colleagues from the CDC in the October 16, 1997 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine ("Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 in the United States, 1976 to 1994," NEJM, 1997;337:1105-1111).
