According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 37th ICAAC, held September 28 - October 1, 1997, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, "Contamination of a heart valve allograft at implantation can occur despite disinfection during processing and can result in endocarditis in the recipient. In May 1996, a 61-year-old man underwent aortic valve replacement with an allograft and developed Candida albicans postoperative aortic valve endocarditis and fungemia 16 days after surgery. The patient was treated with 57 days of amphotericin B and remains symptom-free 10 months after repeat valve replacement surgery.
