Once On the Decline, Tuberculosis Cases On The Rebound

Public health officials are keeping a wary eye on tuberculosis, a once-rampant disease brought under control at mid-century but now threatening again.

The specter of the disease is greater in poor countries, but illnesses like AIDS that weaken immune systems gives TB new opportunities to spread in the United States.

"TB remains a challenge. Worldwide, it is huge," said Dr. Quentin Young, a Chicago internist and the president of the 32,000-member American Public Health Association, which is meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana.
