"Serotype Distribution of Invasive Group B Streptococcus Isolates in Maryland: Implications for Vaccine Development."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 37th ICAAC, held September 28 - October 1, 1997, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, "Invasive infection due to the group B streptococcus (GBS) is a major public health problem among infants and adults. The development of serotype-specific GBS vaccines depends on knowledge of the serotype distribution of GBS isolates from patients with invasive infection. In addition, infection due to serotype V GBS, a previously rare serotype, appears to have recently emerged. We studied the serotype distribution of 547 Maryland residents with invasive GBS infection in 1992 and 1993 using active, population-based surveillance in all acute-care hospitals...
