WHO Confirms Second Case Of New Flu Virus Strain In Humans

Published in Medical Letter on the CDC and FDA, December 22nd, 1997

A second case of human infection with influenza strain A (H5N1) has been found by China's Government Virus Unit (GVU) in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced December 2, 1997.

Confirmation of the laboratory specimen is now being sought from the WHO Collaborating Center on influenza at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Results were expected to be available by December 8. Preliminary investigations, however, have not indicated that the most recent case is related to the first one, which was confirmed in August 1997.
