AIDS Placebo Trial Results Due in January 1998

Drug trials to cut the rate of mother-to-child transmission of the virus that leads to AIDS will be completed by January 1998, leading health experts said.

Trials in Thailand, Ivory Coast, and elsewhere that use a short treatment of the drug AZT aim to prevent women passing on HIV to their babies during the final stages of pregnancy.

AZT is an anti-retroviral drug designed by Glaxo Wellcome to prevent the onset of AIDS in people with HIV.
