Two More Cases of Bird-to-Human Transmitted Flu Reported in Hong Kong

Published in Medical Letter on the CDC and FDA, December 22nd, 1997

According to a South China news source, the Hong Kong Department of Health announced on December 6, 1997, the discovery of two more cases of H5N1 influenza after initial laboratory findings, reported Dorothy Preslar in a ProMED mail communication (vol.97/no.298).

Specimens have been forwarded to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for confirmation. CDC experts, who were scheduled to arrive in Hong Kong the week of December 8, 1997, to investigate the situation after the second case was announced December 1, arrived in Hong Kong days earlier. The Health Department called an urgent meeting of the Special Working Group for December 7.
