According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 10th International Conference on Negative Strand Viruses, held September 21-26, 1997, in Dublin, Ireland, "The term 'antigenic sin' is frequently used to describe the strain-specific serologic response to earlier influenza strains after infection or vaccination with later variants. It has also been reported that antibodies against 'historic' subtypes believed to be absent from humans at the time of testing could be found among certain age cohorts in the general population.
