High Flu and Pneumonia Death Rates Underscore Gaps in Prevention

The news that deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza have "exceeded the epidemic threshold" underscored the importance of preventive action, according to William Ershler, M.D., Institute for Advanced Studies in Immunology and Aging (IASIA).

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), for the second week in a row, the percentage of deaths attributable to these two diseases exceeded the 7.3 percent the CDC sets as a benchmark for epidemics, reaching 8.6 percent for the week ending January 17, 1998.
