Improperly Maintained Hemodialysis Equipment Linked to Three Outbreaks

Three outbreaks of bloodstream infections probably were due to contamination of the waste drain ports in the same model of hemodialysis machine.

Insufficient training of hemodialysis personnel about the design and proper handling and maintenance of the machines may contribute to the transmission of bacterial bloodstream infections (BSIs) to hemodialysis patients, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, Georgia, indicated.
