AIDS Vaccine Study Director's Actions Questioned

A U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) AIDS vaccine trial and a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) AIDS project have been put on hold pending the outcome of an investigation of a Los Angeles County health department epidemiologist.

Amid allegations of planning to use poor blacks in Los Angeles as "guinea pigs" and county resources for the NIH-funded vaccine project, the California county's chief epidemiologist, Dr. Peter Kerndt, was placed on administrative leave January 30, 1998.
