Unprotected Sex Common Among Men With AIDS

Many hetero- and homosexual men with AIDS report unsafe sex.

The reports were gathered by CDC researchers from men reported to the Los Angeles Department of Health Services with AIDS.

More than half of heterosexual men with AIDS (58.8 percent) reported unprotected vaginal or anal sex in the past year. More than a third of homosexual men (35.0 percent) reported unprotected anal sex in the past year.

"There is a need for targeted and sustained interventions," said Paul Simon of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, Georgia.
