The outbreak involved 21 cases of active tuberculosis and 311 tuberculin skin test conversions between 1994 and 1996. Murine studies conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed the involved strain to be remarkably fast fast-growing ("An Outbreak Involving Extensive Transmission of a Virulent Strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis," The New England Journal of Medicine, March 5, 1998;333(10):633-639).
