Search On To Find Hidden HCV in U.S.

Millions of Americans are infected with hepatitis C and most do not even know it so they have decades to pass the virus around, top health experts told Congress.

But Dr. David Satcher, Surgeon General, pledged to track down as many of them as possible. "We will aggressively pursue the people we believe have been exposed from positive donors," Satcher told the House Subcommittee on Human Resources.

Dr. C. Everett Koop, Former Surgeon-General, told the committee that only about 225,000 of the 4.5 million infected Americans knew they had the incurable and often fatal virus.
